THRONE WATCH — something's different tonight.
The fire-rings are behaving strangely.
It started the day the coloring book arrived in the village — the one with all five defenders, the Empty Throne, Jack and Alice on its pages. Since then, the rings have been drifting lower than usual, circling the square in slow, deliberate loops nobody's ever seen before. Last night they formed a perfect circle over the village well and held it for nearly an hour.
Old Maren, who's watched the skies for forty years, says she's never seen anything like it. "They're curious," she insists. "Something changed, and they know it."
The leading theory in the village: the fire-rings can feel when the world gets bigger. And a book — a real book, out there in the world beyond, with their world inside it — that's the world getting bigger.
Whatever it means, one thing's certain: everyone's talking about it.
